Fujigen PP3-550, blue, made in Japan around 1995. It’s awesome, yeah? This model was made under legendary guitar makers Fujigen Gakki’s house brand, a few years before the FGN brand became the big thing it is today. The factory was building tonnes of guitars for Fender and Ibanez at the time, so they were in good form. This model was made famous by Japanese all-girl renegade garage pop punks Shonen Knife, who exploded internationally when they landed the Nevermind tour of Europe with a little band called Nirvana. It’s super fun to play: the neck is comfy, round and super easy in the hands, and at 3kg it’s very lightweight. The matte finish has a fleck through it, so it has a certain tactile appeal in the hands. The combo of an LP-style bridge, chambered body and the three lipstick pickups lends this a very immediate sound. It’s glassy and spanky, with a hi-fi sparkle balanced by a walloping attack and rounded lows. It sounds awesome, perfect for surf, punk or indie stuff. It looks a bit like a cartoon guitar: weird, but I’m totally on board for it. It’s a party guitar, through and through.
